Product Spotlight: Devacurl Set It Free

As a reader of this blog, you probably know how much we here at Salon of Curls love and our proud users of DevaCurl. We think it’s a great brand to go with your curls! One of our favorite products from DevaCurl is none other than “Set it Free,” a fast and easy spray bottle that tames hair by locking in moisture and holding up those curls.

Autumn and winter have always been the two seasons that worry many curly-haired ladies, simply because the weather is always fluctuating. As a result, it could cause dryness and frizz to one’s curls. DevaCurl’s “Set it Free” is the perfect solution to that! Not only does it retain the moisture for your curls for up to 48 hours, it also eliminates fizz and enhances curls with more definition and shine. Dry hair has got nothing on this product!

The formula of “Set It Free” made with beeswax and olive oil is guaranteed to replenish your curls giving them the ultimate shine they need. Just spray and you’re good to go for the day! Additionally, this DevaCurl product has a very sweet lemon-lime scent to it, giving your curls a spritz of citrus. Don’t worry about the scent being too overwhelming; it’s subtle enough for your enjoyment!

Note, however, that you should check out the other ingredients to make sure you’re not allergic to anything. This goes for all products that you apply to your precious curls! For the best results, use this product with other DevaCurl products as well.

10 Ways To Add Moisture To Your Hair

As autumn and winter make their way into our lives, the more we begin to worry about our curls becoming more brittle and dry. Thankfully for you, we here at Salon of Curls have compiled some ways in one place, both naturally and with products, for you to maintain that moisture in your hair to avoid any problems.

  1. Look into the products you’ve been using. Take a bit of time to experiment with other brands and see if they are able to lock in moisture better than the one you’ve been currently using. Feel free to ask us for suggestions!

  2. Use coconut or olive oil! Rub a little oil into your scalp. Cover it carefully with a cap and leave it in overnight.  In the morning, shampoo and rinse as usual.

  3. Minimize the use of harsh hair products, colors, dryers, and curlers. Let your hair breathe, and keep it as natural as possible. Avoid it when you can for the health of your hair!

  4. Banana and avocado? You better believe it! Mash one banana and one avocado together.   Spread mixture on your hair and leave it for up to 1 hour. Rinse with warm water.

  5. Give your hair and scalp a good massage with a few drops of sunflower oil. The key is to not wash the oil out and let it work its wonders. Start with the ends and work toward the scalp.

  6. Remember that avocado? Bring it back to make a nourishing hair conditioner with honey, and apply it to your hair at least twice a week. Also with honey, try milk. Warm up two cups of whole milk with one teaspoon honey. Pour the mixture on to dry hair and let it sit for 15 minutes. Shampoo and rinse as usual.

  7. Find some handy products that are both great for moisture and maintain the bounce in your curls.  It ultimately varies depending on hair type, so good luck searching!

  8. Mayonnaise doubles as an effective moisturizing conditioner for dry hair, says Steven Docherty, the senior art director at Vidal Sassoon Salon in New York City. Use real mayo, not the fat-free kind.  Spread one tablespoon all over hair and cover with a shower cap.  Let it sit for at least 30 minutes and rinse out completely.

  9. Do some additional research to find what’s right for YOU. Everyone’s hair is different, so these tips may not be as helpful as others, so it’s always worth a shot to dig deeper for the sake of your hair!

  10. Lastly, come to Salon of Curls! We will do what we can to get to “know” your hair and do what’s best for it in terms of moisture and health.

Hope these tips were helpful! Don’t hesitate to come to us for any questions, comments, and your own tips as well!

Salon of Curls: How To Identify Harmful Ingredients

All you curly girls know that there are thousands of hair products to choose from. As there are thousands to choose from there are also tons of bad ingredients you should stay away from in order to keep your hair healthy. But what about those pesky hidden “bad” ingredients all curly girls must be warned against?

As you probably know, “Sulfate-free” is always something to look for. Now why should we stay away from sulfates? Well, it’s plain old detergent and as all curly girls know or ought to know, you do not want detergent coming anywhere near your hair. If you see a combination of words with the word sulfate at the end, such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Laureth Sulfate, Coco Sulfate etc… STAY CLEAR! Your hair will dry out and moisture will not penetrate your locks.

Another evil hair ingredient is silicone. Silicone, when used in combination with other products, can weigh hair down and create unwanted frizz. Silicones create a coating around your hair shaft, which means no moisture and tons of frizz! Remember that curly hair aches for moisture and silicone just won’t let that moisture in.

Next time you are in the shampoo aisle make sure to read all the ingredients. All curly girls deserve to have happy and healthy hair that is sulfate, silicone and paraben free. We here at Salon of Curls encourage you to try DevaCurl products since they don’t use any of those icky ingredients and it’s our preferred product.
