How to Avoid Bed Head

Like most curly girls you probably have, at one time or another, woken up in the morning with a tangle of knots. So you decide to brush your hair out? That’s a curly girl no-no! I am sure when you look down at your brush you can see unsightly clumps of good healthy hair…uh oh.

Now how do you avoid this curly hair bad dream, you may ask? Well, there are a couple of ways: one is to make sure your hair is up before you go to sleep so that you don’t get toss-and-turn tangles. This is probably the most economically friendly way to keep your hair in place.

At Salon of Curls, however, we have found that the best way to take care of your hair at night is by sleeping with a satin pillowcase, which seriously helps reduce bedtime tangles. The satin fabric leaves hair manageable and can actually protect your hair from tangles along with helping maintain moisture in your hair (which every curly girl needs). And guess what…your curls will even last longer!

Another way to reduce a tangled bed head is to actually get a satin sleep cap. I know so 1940’s right? But those classic women had the right idea. Satin sleep caps will help any curly girl maintain their perfect curls even after a night of sleep. With this method, you don’t have to switch out your cotton pillowcase.

We understand that keeping up your curls is important to most curly girls, so no matter what method you use to keep your curl in shape at night, we hope it works for you! Let us know on Facebook what you do for your curls at bedtime!

Product Spotlight: Devacurl AnGEL

DevaCurl AnGEL is the go to gel for Salon of Curls. Now why would one salon subscribe to a particular product? Well, as a curly hair expert who has used all different types of products for curls, I have found that DevaCurl works the best for most types of curls. This is not just any old product spotlight where Salon of Curls is trying to push a product; we genuinely believe that when you apply the Devacurl gel before you get out of the shower and while your hair is 'sopping wet' your curls will become more defined, quenched and well, if curls had feelings…happy.

Here are some cool facts about DevaCurl AnGel: it is a lightweight moisturizing gel that dissolves into your curls quickly. Best of all it is NOT tested on animals. Since the gel dissolves instantly when applied to wet hair it helps form your curls into your perfect curl shape without that sticky or stiff feeling that some gel products create.

Remember that the most important thing for curls is that they stay hydrated. The more hydrated your curls are the less frizz you have to deal with. Conditioning systems and gel products that work to hydrate instead of mask frizz are the way to go. Health, Strength and Vitality are important for your curls, this is why DevaCurl AnGEL is the product of choice at Salon of Curls. So here’s a shout out to all you curly girls…when in doubt make sure to keep your curls hydrated and happy from the moment you step out of the shower by applying DevaCurl AnGEL… before you get out of the shower!

Different Curl Types: What Kind of Curly Girl are You?

The Wave: The loosest and easiest to manage curl is the wavy curl. The wavy curl usually starts a few inches away from the scalp. The curl makes a long s shape.  The best way to deal with wavy hair is to use products that do not weigh your hair down – try a light mousse. When your hair is dry you can use a little gel to keep the waves from getting too messy. Wavy hair is great because the frizz factor is pretty low, which makes for a happy curly girl with pretty flowing waves.

The Curl:  This type of curl is one of the most classic – Boticelli paintings are full of this long luxurious looking curl. The basic curl is a clearly defined curl that is bouncy, with curls in a tighter s shape than the wavy curl. The best way to deal with this type of hair is to keep the frizz factor down by keeping your hair hydrated. Make sure to use a deep conditioner at least once a week. Do not brush dry hair regularly or your hair will turn into a full blown frizzy mess. It is best to comb this type of hair before showering. Use a diffuser to keep your hair curly, add a bit of gel and product and you are good to go.  This kind of curl will curl up naturally on its own.

The Tight Curl: The tight curl is one of the most difficult curls to deal with, but when styled and dealt with in the right ways you can have one of the most stylish and chic heads of hair imaginable. This type of hair is extra thirsty, so you have to make sure you use an ample amount of product in your hair after showering. Comb your fingers through your hair and use a diffuser. This way your hair will stay frizz free and quenched. No one deserves a dry head of hair!
